Mornings and life in general can be so hectic at our house, and as a busy mom of 3, wifey to a great man, loads of laundry to do, wholesome meals to prepare, a home to keep tidy and under control, and a part time job, can easily distract me from looking after myself, and so beautifying myself may not be a top priority on my list most times.
I do however try to make sure that I look and feel my best in this season of life with some basic tricks that I would love to share with you. I for one prefer to have that “rested” look. That just made me laugh! Ironic.. I know. Yes, I am a mom and that comes with it but I can still try to look like I had a restful sleep… right? And after we look at the outside beauty routines, we will move the inner beauty which overpowers any other outward beauty tips! I am the kind of woman who likes to look after herself on her outside and her inside.
The following are some tips and tricks that I use to feel/look my best.
1. Nighly Skin Care 🌼
Cleanse the face and neck, and tone afterwards to remove all of the day’s stress, impurities and makeup. After cleansing your face, a soothing facial toner, such as witch hazel rose water, is a great way to clean the pores of skin – especially if you have sensitive skin like me. It is one amazing toner, alcohol-free and really soothing for that rejuvenated and younger look. Also use a night moisturizer at bedtime to nourish the tired skin during the night’s sleep. I like to use a non-irritating eye cream as well (just because I am in my mid-thirties and I guess some “wisdom” lines are starting to show). I make my own moisturizer (with the micro-power of the essential oils) which is so nourishing to my skin, or if I am not in the mood for that one, I skip and use another night moisturizer instead, like the Body Shop vitamin E one… Whatever you use, make sure you cleanse, tone, and nourish your face and neck every night before bedtime. Your face (always exposed to sun, wind, free radicals etc) will thank you in the years to come.
I have a pale rosy skin tone, and I really like the look of a slight tan. I don’t use this on a regular basis, but mostly when I am really tired (crazy shifts, too many shifts, and other crazy days that make me look exhausted and ashen!) So basically, once a week during such crazy periods, or whenever I feel like a need a little sunless tan, I put some gradual sunless tanning moisturizer on, and love the look in the morning! Easy!
Now, I don’t know about you, but I like to take 10 minutes of the day to “fix” my face in the morning. Not only does my mood improve that entire day by feeling good about myself.. but I also like to be a pleasant wife and mom for my little family, instead of a tired looking black-eyed panda. They are cute but not if I looked like them! What works for me is:
✿ Good concealer for my somewhat dark circles (yes.. I am a mom.. so that comes with it)
✿ 2 coats of black mascara for brighter eyes
✿ Some eye shadow/liner
✿ Good tweezers to keep those eye brows in shape (no time for brow threading appointments over here!)
✿ Lip color, gloss, lip balm, or tinted lip balm. I have one around everywhere (purse, car, bathroom, bedroom mirror, coats!) so I can just put some on and keep those lips glowing and moistened instead of crusty and chapped. This one is my all time favourite in Rhubarb tint, not super expensive and it is natural! And this is a dazzling one, which I really love as well.

✿ Don’t know where to add this, but I do it right after putting my makeup on.. earrings.. nothing fancy, just simple plain earrings for that final feminine touch.
It sounds like a whole lot of things, but it really just takes me 5-10 minutes a day! Maybe 15 minutes when all 3 kids are around me 🙂
4. Soaking and Detoxifying Bath 🛁
Once a week I like to treat myself with a warm and detoxifying bath! It is so relaxing and much needed after tending to my family’s needs from morning to night. I save this treat for evening time when my little ones are asleep so that I won’t be interrupted by gas pains, little accidents, hunger, tiny bottoms to wipe, or sibling fights to attend to. If I cannot for whatever reason take a bath.. a nice hot shower will do just fine to distress my tired self, and then get into bed refreshed and relaxed. Relaxed mom = Happier mom. We really do need to look after ourselves too mamas, so that we can be and feel our best for our beautiful treasures with whom we live.
To make the bath detoxifying you will need to add a handful of Epsom salts, 10 drops detoxifying essential oils (such as lemongrass, lavender, wild orange) and a half cup of baking soda. Add ten drops total of any of the 3 oils (can be combined too!) This combination draws out toxins, lowers stress-related hormones, and balances your pH levels. Since I only use drop amounts, I prefer the purest essential oils (such as doTERRA) over the cheaper brands, which are safe for ingestion – I take them internally for their health benefits (more on that in another future post!) But that is just my personal preference. So make sure you look after yourselves mamas: soak those tired muscles, joints and bones; and relax yourself for a restful night sleep…
I just could not leave this one out. My hubby knows quite well from our 16 years together just how much I love to add a touch of fragrance… My sweet kids know that about me as well.. and while we snuggle or hug, they tell me while they push their tiny faces in my neck “Mommy, you always smell so nice” or “You smell like mommy” (my favourite one… smelling like their mommy). I am happy that they are building that sense of pleasant memory of their mommy smelling good, which is only one puff/spray away. Yummy or pleasant scents can trigger emotions and memories that can go decades back in my case… Anyhow, my top 3 fragrances of all times (which, may I tell you, last me for about 7 years a bottle) are……… (yes, I guess I am a little too excited about them, haha!)
So now that we took care of our outside, let’s get to the more important parts of our beauty routine: THE TAKING CARE OF OUR INSIDE, SO WE CAN GLOW ON THE OUTSIDE!!!
Imagine not drinking any liquids for the next 7 to 9 hours! No water, no coffee, no tea, no pop, no soda, no milk – no nothing! I already get thirsty at the thought of it! While we sleep our bodies become dehydrated from not giving it any fluids during those long sleeping hours. As soon as I wake up, my mouth feels dry and my body begs for water. I tend to drink 1-2 cups of water as soon as I come to the kitchen after waking. Water in the morning not only freshens me up and energizes me. It also flushes the toxins out of the body, jumpstarts my metabolism, and fuels my brain (which is 76% water) thus feeling less moody and more physically and mentally energized. Every tissue, cell and organ in our bodies needs water to function properly. So if you don’t like drinking water, you should make it your best friend, maybe even by adding lemon to it to make it less bland. Just an idea!
7. Cod Liver Oil
Cod liver oil is a naturally rich source of anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA). It is loaded with beneficial and nutrient-dense vitamins as well (vit. A and D). Both omega 3 fatty acids, and vitamin A and D3 are known from research to lower inflammation, reduce the risk of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, prevent blood clotting, prevent and treat diabetes, preserve brain health and prevent depression and other mood/attention deficit disorders (soooo good for kids too). Some years ago, after extensive research, I found the Norwegian Cod Liver oil which is one of the purest too as there are no hidden metals and other toxic matter inside it; but I am sure there are other brands that you can find. We have been taking our cod liver oil for 8 years now, and we prefer the lemon flavour, mostly because of the kids as there really is no fishy taste to it. My husband and I take 1 Tablespoon daily, and kids half a teaspoon. I started giving my kids cod liver oil when they were 6 months of age, 1-2 drops per day, and gradually increased the amount as they grew older.
Bright smiles come with regular and diligent dental hygiene practices. Good dental hygiene also saves you thousands of dollars from giving it away to the dentist for those cavity repairs (which I am ashamed to admit that I have been doing quite a bit of lately). So I do know how important it is not skip that flossing before bed… where I am found guilty. I used to have a forget-to-floss problem, not a brushing problem.. which I think it’s worse than not brushing as you leave all that gunk in between your teeth where the brush bristles cannot reach properly.
Coconut oil pulling is one amazing and natural teeth brightening ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil inside your mouth on an empty stomach for around 20 minutes; then spitting it out (full of toxins). I began doing this only very recently, but have read many positive comments about it and with impressive outcomes.. It was kind of icky and gross at first, but after a few days I got the hang of it. Just as a warning: you will gag in the beginning if you are not a fan of swishing oil in your mouth for a couple of minutes (let alone 20!), but then it becomes second nature! 😊
Charcoal toothpaste is the craze right now!! But apparently, it has obviously been around for many years, when dentists have not been around to fix those nasty little black cavities, and people still had their bright smiles! Activated charcoal (NOT the one from fireplaces or campfires) has been used for many things, and its main action is that of purifying by binding to and removing impurities/toxins. It is widely used as an intestinal decontaminant to help reduce the effects of food poisoning. Hospitals and emergency rooms have therefore used activated charcoal for its purifying and detoxifying properties in such instances. Activated charcoal is also used in purifying air and water filters. It is noticeably black, but also odourless and tasteless. Charcoal toothpaste can be beneficial to your mouth care as well. There is a whole range of charcoal toothpaste products to choose from online (basically a powdered mixture of activated charcoal and bentonite clay). The results are A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. And make sure you dab a little coconut oil when you brush your teeth, to create that toothpaste texture, but with the extra added power of coconut! My teeth are far from perfect, and even somewhat crooked, but nothing beats a bright smile. So you should most definitely try the charcoal toothpaste for that bright smile of yours too!
9. Recharge your Spiritual Battery 🎶
And the most important beautifying step of all is when you take time each day to recharge your soul, your spiritual battery. Don’t you ever feel that you are so empty, so powerless and so hungry for something more? Only Jesus can fill that emptiness that our soul hungers for.

When you feel desperate and exhausted, and when your heart cries out for help, you need to turn to His word that is full of wisdom, and power and love! I personally like reading women’s devotionals that help me in this journey of motherhood or womanhood from Christ’s perspective; and also listening to worship songs throughout the busy morning and day that uplift me! The problem that many of us face, is that when we look and search to fill that inner need in our empty soul, many of us think that money, wealth, trophies, immorality, sex, flawless beauty, alcohol or drugs can give us the happiness and fulfillment we so long for. That is Satan’s deceit of making us believe that materialism and immorality are the source of true happiness, when in reality we simply need more of Jesus! As simple as that. Sadly, celebrities are the living proof of my point here. We are in fact created to have that hole in our souls to be filled with Jesus. Once we have Him in our lives, we receive abundantly from His love, forgiveness, power, mercy and blessings. My batteries are running down almost every day, and that is why I need to spend one-on-one time with my Jesus, so I can refuel my batteries for the day ahead! When your soul glows because of Jesus, your body glows too, believe it or not!! Grab a cup of coffee early in the morning, when the kids are napping, or even when they are having some quiet play, or whenever works best for you – and spend some time to know and talk to God. Make sure that you satisfy your soul’s hunger and need with Christ. Your husband, your children, money, beauty can never fulfill it the wholesome way only God can. You will feel like a new, energized being even in the midst of the storm. And you will want to go back for more! That is how you actually become in love with your Saviour. And then you become fearless… and happy… and fulfilled… altogether: BEAUTIFUL
